‘Bath salt’ drugs could enter Canada, experts worry - The Globe and Mail: "An epidemic of “bath salt” abuse is sweeping the United States and some experts worry that it may hit Canada, since the designer drugs are unregulated and available on the Web.
Not actually bath salts, the products labelled Red Dove, Ivory Wave and Hurricane Charlie are also available via small retail outlets to customers, who smoke, snort, inject or eat the chemicals.
The powders’ effects are similar to those of methamphetamine, and can include rapid heart rate, visual hallucinations, paranoia and psychosis, as well as self-mutilation and suicidal thoughts, authorities say.
A man from Fulton, Miss., cut his face and stomach repeatedly after hallucinating on the drugs. In Louisiana, the family of a 21-year-old man says he committed suicide following three days of delirium after he snorted the chemicals, according to the Washington Post."

Bath Salts: A new designer drug hits Belltown: "Last week, Curtis Cartier at the Seattle Weekly profiled a 26-year old Belltown bath salt snorter, who offered his advice on using the designer drug that he says has the affect of cocaine, meth, and Adderall/Ritalin combined.
'I had a great time on it,' the Belltown bartender said. 'It picks you up, lets you stay out longer. It's great, just don't do too much.'
'Bath salts'- known on the street as Purple Rain, Ivory Wave, Pure Ivory, and Vanilla Sky - are powerful methamphetamines that are snorted, smoked, or injected by users.
The drugs cause hallucinations, confusion, disorganization, paranoia, rapid heart rate, suicidal thoughts, intense cravings for the drug, and seizures.
There have been reports across the nation of users cutting or killing themselves after using bath salts.
The chemical components found in the drug, MDPV and mephedrone, currently are not regulated by the USDA, as they are not marketed for human consumption. Bath salts can be sold legally at convenience stores and on the internet, although many states are considering a ban on its sale."

State issues temporary ban on fake cocaine - Florida - MiamiHerald.com: "The white powder marketed as bath salts under names like Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky and Purple Rain mimics cocaine and LSD when snorted. And as of Wednesday, it's illegal in Florida.
Attorney General Pam Bondi issued an emergency rule that makes possession or distribution of the powder a third-degree felony punishable by one to five years behind bars. The rule will remain in place for 90 days, and legislators plan to pass a law making the substance illegal permanently.
Until now, the packets of powder have been sold in convenience stores and head shops. They contain a chemical called methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV. Side effects include increased heart rate, nosebleeds, hallucinations, severe paranoia, seizures and kidney failure. It's typically sold in 500 milligram packets for about $35.
Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen said users usually ingest 10 milligrams or less, but some are consuming entire packets.
In one case, a man under the influence who had ingested the drug displayed near ``superhuman strength'' and required seven officers to subdue him, McKeithen said."

Lowe said the sheriff's office has all five teens in custody and suspects they were involved in 20 unsolved burglaries. Man held in drug case after girlfriend dies - JSOnline: "The body of Jessica Schmidt, 23, was found early Friday by Michael P. O'Brien in the apartment the couple shared in the 2000 block of Sylvan Way, according to a criminal complaint.
O'Brien, 25, was charged Monday with possession of heroin, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the Washington County Jail on $10,000 bail.
According the complaint:
O'Brien told police he and Schmidt had driven to Milwaukee, near Miller Park, on Thursday to buy two quarter-gram bags of heroin for $100 then returned to their apartment and injected some of the drug. After cuddling together in front of the TV, they fell asleep about midnight, O'Brien told police. But when he awoke around 3 a.m. and tried to wake Schmidt, she was not responsive.
His mother, who was also living in the apartment, heard him scream for help and saw him injecting Schmidt with Narcan, a drug used to counteract overdoses of opiate drugs such as heroin, according to the complaint. He also had tried CPR on Schmidt, the complaint says, but neither lifesaving effort was successful."

Roger Levans, of Queens, got off a Delta Airlines flight from Georgetown, Guyana, on December 29, and told customs that he was carrying ‘cooked rabbit,’ according to a criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.
Levans was indeed carrying some food items in the three suitcases he had, but no rabbit. Instead inspectors found three brick-shaped packages filled with three kilos of cocaine.
He was released on a $100,000 bail and told authorities that he works for Guardsmark Security at Yankee Stadium.
In the second case, two men flying into JFK on Christmas Day from San Juan, Puerto Rico have been ordered held on $100,000 bail each on Sunday, Dec. 26 on charges of smuggling 92 pounds of cocaine into the country.
Enmanuel Rojas Peralta, 24, and Israel Rodriguez Jacobo, 25, both of Puerto Rico face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on charges of first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Susanne Brody, of the 90th block of Olesen Drive, became angry around 11 p.m. Dec. 27 when a group declined to give her a lift to Harlem Avenue in Chicago after she approached them in a hotel parking lot on the 1200 block of East Touhy Avenue, according to police reports.
Cannabis and an empty rum bottle were found in Brody’s purse as well as a blue and silver pipe inside her coat pocket, police said. She allegedly said her mother is a witch and added, “I’m a good witch.”
While in the lock-up, she said she wanted cocaine to “stay up all night” and then asked when she could leave to get some, according to a police report.
Brody was also charged with possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia."

Lieutenant Commander Scintar Mejia was about to board a flight to Los Angeles from Manila on Sunday when a pack of cocaine was found in his luggage.

Pintado, deputy director of the airport police, said the suspect was detained overnight at the airport and committed suicide after seeking permission to go to the bathroom on Monday morning.
'On the way to the toilet, he suddenly ran from his escorts and jumped head first into a 10-feet stairway,' Pintado said. 'He died while being treated in a nearby hospital.'"

Waives Hearing, Remains Jailed - ABC News: "Henry County sheriff's office says the rapper, whose real name is Juaquin James Malphurs, surrendered Monday and waived a hearing Tuesday. His attorney says he hopes a probation violation charge is resolved this week so the rapper can be released.
Malphurs is charged with possessing marijuana and a controlled substance and two with offenses stemming from firearms possession. He is charged with breaking anti-gang laws and violating probation for driving on a suspended license.
His attorney, Ted Johnson, says the rapper was not home when it was searched, and the people who were there should take responsibility."
