The refurbished vacuum was a gift from her children, and it wasn’t until the woman opened it that they realized it was packed full of drugs, reports the Green Bay Press Gazette.
According to a detective from the Brown County Drug Task Force, “It's likely that a smuggler inserted the drugs into the vacuum cleaner box before the unit was shipped from the Juarez, Mexico, area, where it had been reconditioned.”
Investigators feel the woman whom received the gift had nothing to do with the drug shipment and do not plan on charging her."

Users usually snort the powder and experience effects similar to cocaine and crystal meth, Dr. El Sanadi said. But the euphoria often leads to paranoia, chest pains and irregular heart beats.
'They come in confused, disoriented, with high blood pressure,' said El Sanadi, who first noticed the trend in spring 2010. 'I guarantee you most parents don't even suspect their kids might be doing it.'"

Roger Levans, of Queens, got off a Delta Airlines flight from Georgetown, Guyana, on December 29, and told customs that he was carrying ‘cooked rabbit,’ according to a criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.
Levans was indeed carrying some food items in the three suitcases he had, but no rabbit. Instead inspectors found three brick-shaped packages filled with three kilos of cocaine.
He was released on a $100,000 bail and told authorities that he works for Guardsmark Security at Yankee Stadium.
In the second case, two men flying into JFK on Christmas Day from San Juan, Puerto Rico have been ordered held on $100,000 bail each on Sunday, Dec. 26 on charges of smuggling 92 pounds of cocaine into the country.
Enmanuel Rojas Peralta, 24, and Israel Rodriguez Jacobo, 25, both of Puerto Rico face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on charges of first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He said the antibody immune response produced in lab mice by the vaccine binds to, cocaine molecules before the drug reached the brains of the animals - preventing any cocaine-related hyperactivity.
The scientist writing in the online edition of Molecular Therapy, said the vaccine effect lasted for at least 13 weeks, the longest time point evaluated."

Cops: Woman asks for cocaine in lockup — Des Plaines news, photos and events — TribLocal.com: "45-year-old Naperville woman charged with criminal damage for allegedly ripping off a car’s sideview mirror when the driver wouldn’t give her a ride asked for cocaine while in the lockup, Des Plaines police said.
Susanne Brody, of the 90th block of Olesen Drive, became angry around 11 p.m. Dec. 27 when a group declined to give her a lift to Harlem Avenue in Chicago after she approached them in a hotel parking lot on the 1200 block of East Touhy Avenue, according to police reports.
Cannabis and an empty rum bottle were found in Brody’s purse as well as a blue and silver pipe inside her coat pocket, police said. She allegedly said her mother is a witch and added, “I’m a good witch.”
While in the lock-up, she said she wanted cocaine to “stay up all night” and then asked when she could leave to get some, according to a police report.
Brody was also charged with possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia."

Officer Jumps to Death After Cocaine Arrest: "35-year-old US Navy officer jumped to his death on Monday in the Philippines after he was arrested at an airport for allegedly carrying cocaine, police said.
Lieutenant Commander Scintar Mejia was about to board a flight to Los Angeles from Manila on Sunday when a pack of cocaine was found in his luggage.
Mejia became unruly after the discovery and even accused officials at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport of a frame-up, according to police Senior Superintendent Manuel Pintado.
Pintado, deputy director of the airport police, said the suspect was detained overnight at the airport and committed suicide after seeking permission to go to the bathroom on Monday morning.
'On the way to the toilet, he suddenly ran from his escorts and jumped head first into a 10-feet stairway,' Pintado said. 'He died while being treated in a nearby hospital.'"

Led by Mary Kay Lobo, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and first author of the study, researchers found that the two main neurons (D1 and D2) in the nucleus accumbens region of the brain, an important part of the brain’s reward center, exert opposite effects on cocaine reward. Activation of D1 neurons increases cocaine reward whereas activation of D2 neurons decreases cocaine reward.
“The data suggest a model whereby chronic exposure to cocaine results in an imbalance in activity in the two nucleus accumbens neurons: increased activity in D1 neurons combined with decreased activity in D2 neurons. This further suggests that BDNF-TrkB signaling in D2 neurons mediates this decreased activity in D2 neurons,” said Dr. Lobo."

Gardai believe that the cocaine which was found in Gerry Ryan's system was supplied by a junior member of Thompson's Crumlin-Drimnagh drug gang.
It is believed that the cocaine was brought into the country through Christy Kinahan's drug supply channels before being dispersed through Thompson's distribution network.
A source has told the Herald that a criminal investigation like the one carried out after the death of model Katy French was 'unlikely' because of the circumstances surrounding their deaths."

Her husband faces four years in jail for similar offences involving smuggling hashish, committed in 2003, and having to stand trial on other drugs charges."

Broadcaster Gerry Ryan died of heart failure after using cocaine - The Irish Times - Sat, Dec 11, 2010: "RTÉ BROADCASTER Gerry Ryan was under enormous personal, financial and professional stress just before his death from heart failure after using cocaine, the Dublin City Coroner’s Court heard yesterday.
Returning a verdict of death by misadventure, coroner Dr Brian Farrell said Ryan (53) had chronic damage to his heart which meant death “could have occurred at any time” from a cardiac arrhythmia, an electrical disturbance in the heart. He had used cocaine and it was known the drug caused such disturbances, Dr Farrell found.
“This is a sudden unexpected death in the presence of a significantly damaged heart with recent cocaine use as a significant risk factor,” he said.
Ryan died on Friday, April 30th, at his home on Upper Leeson Street, Dublin. His body was discovered by his partner Melanie Verwoerd."

The latest drugs-related high-profile death highlights the corrosive effect of organised crime across the social divide.
An inquest on Friday heard that Mr Ryan died of arrythmia 
triggered by his use of cocaine with alcohol. A verdict of death by misadventure was recorded.
While no investigation will now take place, gardai believe that Mr Ryan was supplied with cocaine by a gang controlled by the notorious criminal, 'Fat' Freddie Thompson.

Federal Criminal Sentencing Guidelines for Crack Cocaine Cases Now in Effect :: Jacksonville Criminal Lawyer Blog: "As criminal defense lawyers in the Jacksonville, Florida area who handle all criminal cases in state and federal courts, we have seen how people convicted of crack cocaine crimes can receive much higher sentences than those convicted of powder cocaine crimes where the amount of powder cocaine was similar to or even less than the crack cocaine in the related case. The unfairness of these sentencing rules, which disproportionately punished people involved with crack cocaine over those involved with powder cocaine, has been discussed by prosecutors, criminal defense lawyers, federal judges and even the Congress and the president.
Finally, new rules bringing sentences for crack cocaine cases and powder cocaine cases closer together have been enacted. The Fair Sentencing Act, which will permanently become the law next year, is now in effect.
The old federal sentencing guidelines would provide that a person caught with as few as 5 grams of crack cocaine would receive a five year minimum mandatory prison sentence. However, it would take at least 500 grams of powder cocaine to get the same minimum mandatory sentence. That was quite a disparity. With the new law and federal sentencing rules, it will now take 28 grams of crack cocaine to trigger the five year minimum mandatory prison sentence. The threshold for the ten year minimum mandatory prison sentence has been increased from 50 grams of crack cocaine to 280 grams of crack cocaine.
