white powder marketed as bath salts under names like Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky and Purple Rain mimics cocaine and LSD when snorted. And as of Wednesday, it's illegal in Florida.

State issues temporary ban on fake cocaine - Florida - MiamiHerald.com: "The white powder marketed as bath salts under names like Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky and Purple Rain mimics cocaine and LSD when snorted. And as of Wednesday, it's illegal in Florida.

Attorney General Pam Bondi issued an emergency rule that makes possession or distribution of the powder a third-degree felony punishable by one to five years behind bars. The rule will remain in place for 90 days, and legislators plan to pass a law making the substance illegal permanently.

Until now, the packets of powder have been sold in convenience stores and head shops. They contain a chemical called methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV. Side effects include increased heart rate, nosebleeds, hallucinations, severe paranoia, seizures and kidney failure. It's typically sold in 500 milligram packets for about $35.

Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen said users usually ingest 10 milligrams or less, but some are consuming entire packets.

In one case, a man under the influence who had ingested the drug displayed near ``superhuman strength'' and required seven officers to subdue him, McKeithen said."

BBC exposes tobacco crime gangs in Scotland

BBC News - BBC exposes tobacco crime gangs in Scotland: "llegal products being sold by crime gangs were bought by a BBC Scotland undercover team, who secretly filmed the supply chain.

Half of all hand-rolled tobacco smoked in the UK is now counterfeit, as is one in every five cigarettes.

The illegal trade is estimated to cost the Treasury billions of pounds in lost taxes.

Black market tobacco products, which use the branding of famous names, do not adhere to levels of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide set out for legitimate products.

Products bought by the BBC team were tested and shown to have the highest levels of toxins recorded in the UK.

The results prompted one health expert to warn of a 'health timebomb' waiting to explode.

The UK is the second most expensive place to smoke in the world because 80% of the price is tax."

Teens Snorted Ashes of Man, 2 Dogs Mistaken for Cocaine

Police: Teens Snorted Ashes of Man, 2 Dogs Mistaken for Cocaine: "Police in Florida say teenagers they arrested as suspected burglars admitted to snorting the stolen cremated remains of a man and two dogs because they mistakenly thought it was cocaine.

'It is definitely very odd to have them stolen in the first place,' Marion County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jenifer Lowe told AOL News. 'Then, what they did with them is just beyond bizarre, to me anyway.'

Lowe said the sheriff's office has all five teens in custody and suspects they were involved in 20 unsolved burglaries. Three of the suspects arrested Wednesday have been identified: Matrix Andaluz, 18, Waldo Soroa, 19, and Jose David Diaz Marrero, 19. The other two suspects have not been identified because of their ages. All five face numerous charges connected with the cases, police said."

Lorry driver jailed in France for drugs smuggling is freed | Glasgow and West | STV News: "Alistair Campbell, from Killin in Perthshire, spent three years and three months in prison after he was accused of organising an attempt to bring 117kg of cocaine into the UK.

His mother used her savings to fund a legal battle which has overturned his conviction and nine year jail sentence.

The French judge who freed the 49-year-old expressed serious concern over the handling of the case by the authorities in the UK and France.

The case started in 2000 when Scots lorry driver Jeffrey Logan was caught near Calais with three boxes containing the cocaine.

Logan told the French authorities he had been told to pick up the boxes by Mr Campbell, a fellow lorry driver from Scotland."

Three More Countries Seek Prisoner-Transfer Deals With Indonesia | The Jakarta Globe

The Indonesia Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The World Readers)Three More Countries Seek Prisoner-Transfer Deals With Indonesia | The Jakarta Globe: "Besides Australia, three other countries have approached Indonesia for prisoner-transfer arrangements, Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said on Monday.

'Australia, Hong Kong, Iran and Brazil have conveyed their requests to us,' Patrialis told reporters at the State Palace.

The government, he said, was exploring the proposals given that Indonesia did not have any laws regulating such.

'We're studying it since we don't have a legal framework for this. We could put this in as an amendment to the law on imprisonment,' he added.

Last week, Roger Wilkins, secretary of Australia’s Attorney-General’s Department, met with Attorney General Basrief Arief to discuss a prisoner-transfer agreement that may see convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby serving her jail term in her country instead of in a Bali jail."

Man held in drug case after girlfriend dies - JSOnline

Man held in drug case after girlfriend dies - JSOnline: "The body of Jessica Schmidt, 23, was found early Friday by Michael P. O'Brien in the apartment the couple shared in the 2000 block of Sylvan Way, according to a criminal complaint.

O'Brien, 25, was charged Monday with possession of heroin, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the Washington County Jail on $10,000 bail.

According the complaint:

O'Brien told police he and Schmidt had driven to Milwaukee, near Miller Park, on Thursday to buy two quarter-gram bags of heroin for $100 then returned to their apartment and injected some of the drug. After cuddling together in front of the TV, they fell asleep about midnight, O'Brien told police. But when he awoke around 3 a.m. and tried to wake Schmidt, she was not responsive.

His mother, who was also living in the apartment, heard him scream for help and saw him injecting Schmidt with Narcan, a drug used to counteract overdoses of opiate drugs such as heroin, according to the complaint. He also had tried CPR on Schmidt, the complaint says, but neither lifesaving effort was successful."

Wisconsin woman received vacuum stuffed full of drugs - National Strange News | Examiner.com

Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum CleanerWisconsin woman received vacuum stuffed full of drugs - National Strange News | Examiner.com: "This past Christmas, one Green Bay woman received a gift that she will never forget, a vacuum cleaner packed with two pounds of crystal methamphetamine and 2.2 pounds of cocaine.

The refurbished vacuum was a gift from her children, and it wasn’t until the woman opened it that they realized it was packed full of drugs, reports the Green Bay Press Gazette.

According to a detective from the Brown County Drug Task Force, “It's likely that a smuggler inserted the drugs into the vacuum cleaner box before the unit was shipped from the Juarez, Mexico, area, where it had been reconditioned.”

Investigators feel the woman whom received the gift had nothing to do with the drug shipment and do not plan on charging her."

Fake cocaine, bath salts and teens: Lethal combination - Fort Lauderdale Parenting Teens | Examiner.com

Masada Bath Salts, Relaxing Lavender, Dead Sea Mineral, 64 Ounces (1.814 kg)Fake cocaine, bath salts and teens: Lethal combination - Fort Lauderdale Parenting Teens | Examiner.com: "Bath salts are being misused as 'fake cocaine' and Florida teens are going to the hospital after using these bath salts.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, 'We're seeing teenagers experiment with this,' said Dr. Nabil El Sanadi, chief of emergency medicine for Broward Health. 'They will do stuff that they wouldn't normally do, like dive from a third-story window into a pool. It's very, very dangerous.'

Users usually snort the powder and experience effects similar to cocaine and crystal meth, Dr. El Sanadi said. But the euphoria often leads to paranoia, chest pains and irregular heart beats.

'They come in confused, disoriented, with high blood pressure,' said El Sanadi, who first noticed the trend in spring 2010. 'I guarantee you most parents don't even suspect their kids might be doing it.'"

Three men have been arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport since the Christmas holiday

Three men have been arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport since the Christmas holiday, in two separate cases, for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country.

Roger Levans, of Queens, got off a Delta Airlines flight from Georgetown, Guyana, on December 29, and told customs that he was carrying ‘cooked rabbit,’ according to a criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.

Levans was indeed carrying some food items in the three suitcases he had, but no rabbit. Instead inspectors found three brick-shaped packages filled with three kilos of cocaine.

He was released on a $100,000 bail and told authorities that he works for Guardsmark Security at Yankee Stadium.

In the second case, two men flying into JFK on Christmas Day from San Juan, Puerto Rico have been ordered held on $100,000 bail each on Sunday, Dec. 26 on charges of smuggling 92 pounds of cocaine into the country.

Enmanuel Rojas Peralta, 24, and Israel Rodriguez Jacobo, 25, both of Puerto Rico face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on charges of first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

“The defendants are alleged to have brazenly tried to smuggle 92 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $3 million into Queens via JFK airport,” said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. “Drugs such as these are a scourge on soci- ety and endanger our citizens — particularly our young people.”DISCLAIMER: Text may be subject to copyright. This blog does not claim copyright to any such text. Cocaine addicts vaccine that makes immune system see drug as 'intruder' | Mail Online

Cocaine addicts vaccine that makes immune system see drug as 'intruder' | Mail Online: "Researchers have developed a vaccine that could help drug addicts to both break and reverse their costly habit.

The U.S team produced a lasting anti-cocaine immunity in mice by giving them a jab that combined part of the common cold virus with a particle that mimics cocaine.

Study leader, Dr Ronald Crystal, of Weill Cornell Medical College, said: 'Our very dramatic data shows that we can protect mice against the effects of cocaine, and we think this approach could be very promising in fighting addiction in humans.'

He said the antibody immune response produced in lab mice by the vaccine binds to, cocaine molecules before the drug reached the brains of the animals - preventing any cocaine-related hyperactivity.

The scientist writing in the online edition of Molecular Therapy, said the vaccine effect lasted for at least 13 weeks, the longest time point evaluated."

What’s new in the treatment of cocaine addiction?

What’s new in the treatment of cocaine addiction?: "Cocaine dependence continues to be a significant public health problem in the United States. The number of regular cocaine users has not declined significantly in the United States since 1992. Although counseling remains the treatment of choice for cocaine dependence, many cocaine-dependent patients do not respond completely to standard drug counseling. Therefore, the development of new and more effective treatments for cocaine dependence is a research priority. Progress in the understanding of the neurobiology of cocaine dependence has led to the discovery of several promising medications that have already shown encouraging results in controlled clinical trials. Other promising compounds are just becoming available for clinical trials. The use of novel psychosocial techniques such as contingency management seems to increase the efficacy of several medications used to treat cocaine dependence. New medications and new psychosocial techniques are leading to significant improvements in the treatment of cocaine dependence."

Side Effects Of Cocaine – Cocaine Side Effects

Side Effects Of Cocaine – Cocaine Side Effects: "effect of cocaine on the nervous system can vary from user to user. Some users may have a euphoric feeling with increased levels of energy and excitement. On the other hand, some users might feel just the opposite. Restlessness, nausea, vertigo, headaches, dilated pupils and irritability are some of the common side effects of cocaine on the nervous system. Cocaine also plays a major role on brain chemical and alters their functions, thus leading to many grim complications.
People who use cocaine usually use it by sniffing or snorting it. This causes enormous damage to the nasal tract. Some of the common side effects of using cocaine this way include stuffiness, recurrent nosebleeds, hoarseness, and sinusitis. The nasal septum is also damaged as the blood supply is reduced by sniffing in cocaine regularly. A common side effect of cocaine is the “coke nose” where the septum is perforated and produces a whistling sound when the person breathes"

Stimulating Results - Barrons.com: "If mice can say no to cocaine, maybe people can, too.

Research published in the biomedical journal Molecular Therapy last week showed that a common-cold virus, bound with a particle mimicking cocaine, immunized lab mice against cocaine highs for 13 weeks. That's a long stretch for tests like this, and the result bodes well for addiction studies in larger animals and people. Eventually the approach could help open up new markets for drug companies."
