The 80 bales of cocaine, valued at approximately $130 million (US$65 million), was found close to a damaged aircraft nine miles from Punta Gorda, the southernmost town in Belize.
The cocaine, which was kept at Punta Gorda police station for a week, was removed last Friday to Orange Walk, a town in the south of the country, some 150 miles away, where it was destroyed.
The police exercised great caution in destroying the drugs. Every bale was checked to ensure that the contents were cocaine before the substance was thrown into an incinerator.
Samples of each bail have been taken and are kept as exhibit for court proceedings"
